He began to practice at the Oficina do Corpo Academy under Professor Jean Jaques Machado. Gustavo was soon promoted to the rank of Blue Belt at the age of sixteen. When Professor Jean Jaques Machado left Brazil, Gustavo began to train at the legendary Gracie Barra Academy under Professor Carlos Gracie Jr. Gustavo quickly became a strong competitor, winning and placing in numerous tournaments throughout his study.

“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches you to persevere when you face challenges, and to stay committed to your goals even when you feel discouraged. There have been so many times in my life that I wanted to quit, and without BJJ I would have. The truth is that BJJ has made me stronger both physically and mentally. It teaches you a safe, simple, and REALISTIC way to defend yourself from a would-be attacker. It helps you gain confidence, focus, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and discipline. This is why I think that EVERYONE should train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.”
David Valentine
David has been training BJJ since 2009 and has been with Team Carvalho since 2018. “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is my passion. I was always an athlete, but Jiu-Jitsu is fulfilling in a way that sports never were. People play sports but cannot play fighting. We’re drawn to sports because fighting is in our nature. One side competes against the other for victory. Jiu-Jitsu taps into your deeper self, unveiling personality traits of inner strength. As a result, Jiu-Jitsu is a vehicle for self-improvement.”
“I love helping my students become better people through Jiu-Jitsu. They’re able to do this by finding hidden inner strengths that they didn’t even know they had. It never ceases to amaze me.”
