Two Ways to Train

Gi and No-Gi BJJ

Gi Jiu-Jitsu is trained in a traditional kimono. Grips on the collar, sleeves and pants are part of the game, which makes it slower-paced and highly technical. We train Gi on Monday, Wednesday & Thursday.

No-Gi is trained in a rashguard and board shorts without cloth grips, so it's faster and closer to wrestling and MMA grappling. We train No-Gi on Tuesday, Friday & Saturday.

Most members do both, since each one makes the other better.

Before Your First Class

Adult BJJ Questions

Do I need experience or to be in shape to start?

No. Most of our members started with zero experience. Classes are built for all levels, and you'll get in shape by training, not before it.

How does the free week work?

Pick your first class in the free trial sign-up and enter your details, and we'll confirm. You get 7 consecutive days of unlimited training in your program, with no obligation.

What should I wear to class?

Gi classes (Monday, Wednesday & Thursday) use a traditional BJJ kimono. No-Gi classes (Tuesday, Friday & Saturday) use a rashguard and board shorts. Don't have gear yet? Call us before your first class and we'll tell you what to bring.

Can women train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) here?

Yes. Women are welcome in every adult Gi and No-Gi class, training right alongside men, older adults, seniors and complete beginners, with no experience or fitness level needed. Because Jiu-Jitsu uses leverage and technique rather than size and strength, it's one of the most practical martial arts for women's self-defense, and you can choose your partners, go at your own pace and tap out at any time.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu?

Gi Jiu-Jitsu is trained in a kimono, and grips on the collar, sleeves and pants are part of the game, which makes it slower and more technical. No-Gi is trained in a rashguard and shorts without cloth grips, so it's faster-paced and closer to wrestling and MMA grappling. We train Gi on Monday, Wednesday & Thursday and No-Gi on Tuesday, Friday & Saturday, and most members do both.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for self-defense?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) teaches techniques for controlling and escaping from a stronger, heavier opponent using leverage and position rather than strength, and you practice them against resisting partners. It's widely considered one of the most practical martial arts for self-defense, for adults, teens and kids alike.

Can I start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) as an older adult or senior (40, 50, 60+)?

Yes. Adults of every age start BJJ with us, including older adults and seniors, and no experience or fitness level is needed. You can train at your own pace, live sparring is optional, and you can tap out at any time to stop a technique. Because Jiu-Jitsu relies on leverage rather than strength or speed, many older adults find it a practical way to work on strength, flexibility, balance and self-defense.

Do you have classes for homeschool students?

Yes. Homeschooled teens 16 and older can train in our daytime adult classes: Early Birds at 7:00 AM (Wednesday, Thursday & Friday); Morning Adult at 9:00 AM (Monday – Saturday); Afternoon Adult at 4:00 PM (Monday – Friday). Younger homeschooled kids train in the weekday youth classes at 5:00 PM (Little Champs) and 5:45 PM (Kids & Teen BJJ). Jiu-Jitsu is a great way to cover PE and fitness while building discipline and self-defense skills. We're also gauging interest in a daytime homeschool class around 11 AM or noon. If enough families sign up, we'll add it, so join the homeschool interest list.

What does a typical class look like?

Classes combine technique instruction, drilling with a partner, positional sparring and live rolling (sparring). The morning and evening classes are full 2-hour blocks of fundamental and advanced training, while the early bird and afternoon classes are shorter sessions built around the same structure.

Do students have to compete?

No. Competing is optional. Many students train for fitness, self-defense and confidence, while those who want to compete have represented the academy on the podium at Jiu Jitsu World League Florida tournaments, with coaches in their corner.
